About Pontiac Fiero
The Pontiac Fiero is a two-seat, rear-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe built for the 1984–1988 model years. It was Pontiac’s compact sports-oriented model, positioned separately from the larger, front-engine Firebird. Although developed with economy and commuter use in mind, its layout and low body gave it a distinctive place in the US market as the first mass-produced mid-engine car from an American manufacturer.
All Fieros belong to one generation, but the range evolved substantially over five model years. Early cars used a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and were sold in base, Sport Coupe and SE forms. A 2.8-litre V6 and the GT joined for 1985, providing stronger performance. The GT later adopted a fastback roofline, while most other versions retained the original notchback profile. Other notable variations included the 1984 Indy Pace Car replica and the 1988 Formula, which combined the V6 and performance suspension with the notchback body.
The Fiero is also known for its steel space-frame construction with non-structural composite exterior panels. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered, and the final 1988 models received redesigned front and rear suspension and upgraded brakes. Within Pontiac’s range, the Fiero was an unusual, relatively affordable two-seater that combined practical running costs with sports-car styling. Its compact proportions, pop-up headlights and unconventional engineering remain its defining qualities.
