About Pontiac Catalina

The Pontiac Catalina was a full-size, rear-wheel-drive car built through the 1981 model year. Its name first appeared in 1950 on Pontiac hardtops and became a separate model line for 1959. Earlier versions included sedans, pillarless hardtops, convertibles and Safari station wagons. The 2+2 gave some 1960s Catalinas a performance character, but the model usually served as Pontiac’s accessible full-size car below the more richly trimmed Bonneville.

The final generation arrived for 1977 as part of General Motors’ downsizing of its full-size B-body range. It was shorter and lighter than the 1971–1976 model while preserving a roomy cabin and a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Buyers could choose a two-door coupe or four-door sedan, while the Catalina Safari provided full-size wagon capacity. A Brougham version offered upgraded trim early in the generation.

Engine availability varied by year and market, with V6 and V8 units from Pontiac and other GM divisions, mostly paired with automatic transmissions. The 1977–1981 Catalina focused on straightforward transport rather than prestige or overt performance. It is known for six-passenger practicality, a comfortable ride and traditional American full-size-car proportions. Pontiac discontinued the nameplate after 1981.
