About Pontiac Bonneville

The Pontiac Bonneville was an American passenger car produced from 1957 to 2005. The name first appeared on a limited-production, fuel-injected convertible before becoming a separate model for 1958. Early generations were large, well-equipped rear-wheel-drive cars offered as coupes, sedans, convertibles and Safari station wagons. The Bonneville became one of Pontiac’s senior nameplates, combining comfort with the brand’s performance-oriented character.

The sixth generation, built for 1977–1981, retained full-size status but was substantially downsized as General Motors pursued lower weight and better fuel economy. It was available as a two-door coupe, four-door sedan and Safari wagon, with six- and eight-cylinder engines depending on year. Its spacious cabin and traditional rear-wheel-drive layout placed it above Pontiac’s more basic full-size models.

For 1982–1986, the seventh-generation Bonneville moved to a smaller mid-size rear-wheel-drive platform. The model changed direction again in 1987, becoming a full-size, front-wheel-drive sedan. Later generations emphasised aerodynamic styling, handling and technology, with SE, SSE and supercharged SSEi versions expanding the range.

The final 2000–2005 generation remained a four-door front-wheel-drive sedan. Most versions used a 3.8-litre V6, while the later GXP added a Northstar V8 and firmer suspension tuning. The Bonneville is chiefly known for its spaciousness, distinctive Pontiac styling and balance of comfort and performance.
