About Plymouth Voyager
The Plymouth Voyager was a van and minivan nameplate sold from 1974 through the 2000 model year. It first appeared on a full-size passenger van, but it is best known as Plymouth’s version of Chrysler’s front-wheel-drive minivan, introduced for 1984 alongside the Dodge Caravan. It helped establish the minivan as a practical alternative to station wagons and larger vans.
Within Plymouth’s lineup, the Voyager served as a mainstream family and utility vehicle. It shared its basic design with the Caravan and sat below the more upscale Chrysler Town & Country in Chrysler Corporation’s minivan range. Sliding side access, three-row seating and flexible passenger-and-cargo space made it well suited to daily transport, family travel and light-duty hauling.
Three generations of the Plymouth minivan were offered. The standard-wheelbase Voyager emphasized manageable dimensions, while the Grand Voyager, added for 1987, used an extended wheelbase for greater cabin and cargo room. Depending on model year, the range included four-cylinder and V6 engines, several trim levels, and features such as all-wheel drive or dual sliding doors on later versions.
Production ended when Plymouth was discontinued in 2000, after which the Voyager name moved to Chrysler. The Plymouth model remains closely associated with the growth of the North American minivan market and is known chiefly for straightforward packaging, broad family usefulness and efficient use of interior space.
