About Plymouth Turismo
The Plymouth Turismo was a compact, front-wheel-drive hatchback coupe sold for the 1983–1987 model years. It evolved from the Plymouth Horizon TC3 and used Chrysler’s L-body platform, shared with the contemporary Dodge Charger. Its three-door body combined a low, sporty profile with the cargo access and folding rear seat expected of a hatchback.
Within Plymouth’s North American range, the Turismo served as a more style-focused alternative to the practical Horizon. It was marketed as an affordable sporty compact rather than a dedicated high-performance car, appealing to buyers who wanted economical everyday transport with coupe-like styling. Four-cylinder engines were used throughout production, including 1.6-, 1.7- and 2.2-litre units depending on model year and specification, with manual and automatic transmissions offered.
The range included the standard Turismo and the stronger Turismo 2.2. A Duster version was also offered during the mid-1980s, reviving a familiar Plymouth name for a model with sportier exterior and chassis details. The Turismo is chiefly known for its angular 1980s design, compact dimensions, front-wheel-drive layout and useful hatchback packaging. It represented Plymouth’s entry in the era’s market for accessible, sporty-looking small cars.
