About Plymouth Trail Duster
The Plymouth Trail Duster was a full-size, two-door sport utility vehicle sold for the 1974 through 1981 model years. Developed as Plymouth’s counterpart to the Dodge Ramcharger, it used a shortened version of Chrysler’s full-size pickup platform. It was the only SUV marketed under the Plymouth name, giving the mainly car-focused brand an entry in the growing recreational vehicle segment.
Early Trail Dusters combined body-on-frame construction with an open rear body section and an available removable steel roof. For 1981, the redesigned model adopted a permanent steel roof and updated styling, but Plymouth discontinued the nameplate after that model year. Four-wheel drive defined the original version, while a rear-wheel-drive model joined the range for 1975.
Power came from Chrysler inline-six and V8 engines, with availability varying by year and equipment. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered, along with trim levels ranging from basic utility models to better-equipped versions intended for family and recreational use.
The Trail Duster competed with truck-based SUVs such as the Chevrolet K5 Blazer, Ford Bronco and International Scout II. It is known for rugged pickup-derived construction, a short wheelbase, shared components with contemporary Chrysler trucks and comparative rarity beside the longer-lived Ramcharger. Its distinctive Plymouth identity also gives it an unusual place among early full-size SUVs.
