About Plymouth TC3
The Plymouth TC3 was a compact, front-wheel-drive three-door hatchback coupe sold for the 1979 to 1982 model years. Introduced as the Plymouth Horizon TC3, it used Chrysler’s L-body architecture and shared its basic engineering with the five-door Horizon, while featuring lower, more sporting bodywork. Its Dodge counterpart was the Omni 024.
The TC3 arrived as Plymouth expanded its range of smaller, more fuel-conscious vehicles. It was positioned as a youthful, style-led alternative to the practical Horizon rather than as a traditional high-performance coupe. Its sloping rear hatch, folding rear seat and compact dimensions provided useful cargo flexibility, while the 2+2 cabin and distinctive exterior separated it from the standard hatchback.
Early cars used a 1.7-litre four-cylinder engine sourced through Volkswagen, with four-speed manual and three-speed automatic transmissions available. Chrysler’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder joined the range later. Equipment and appearance packages varied by year, and the economy-focused Miser version arrived for 1981. For 1982, Plymouth shortened the name to TC3 and offered the Turismo as a sportier variation.
Known more for low weight, economy and accessible coupe styling than outright performance, the TC3 filled a distinct niche in Plymouth’s early-1980s line-up. After 1982, the model continued in revised form under the Plymouth Turismo name.
