About Plymouth Scamp

The Plymouth Scamp was a compact, car-based pickup produced for a single 1983 model year. It revived a name previously used on a 1970s coupe, but the 1980s Scamp was a very different vehicle. Built on Chrysler’s front-wheel-drive L-body platform, it combined a two-seat passenger compartment with an open cargo bed and unibody construction.

Closely related to the Dodge Rampage, the Scamp gave Plymouth dealers an economical light-utility model. Its front-wheel-drive layout and car-derived cabin distinguished it from conventional rear-wheel-drive compact pickups. Although intended mainly for personal transport and lighter work, it carried a half-ton payload rating.

Every Scamp used a carburetted 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine. Transmission choices included four- and five-speed manuals and a three-speed automatic, depending on the version. The range consisted of the standard Scamp and the Scamp GT. The GT added a sportier appearance, including distinctive graphics and trim, while retaining the same engine.

The Scamp occupied an unusual position in Plymouth’s early-1980s range, blending the driving characteristics and fuel economy of a small car with some pickup practicality. Its short production run and relatively low volume have made it one of the less common Plymouth models of the decade. It is chiefly remembered for its compact dimensions, front-wheel-drive configuration and distinctive coupe-utility design.
