About Plymouth Sapporo
The Plymouth Sapporo was a Japanese-built specialty coupe sold in North America for the 1978–1983 model years. Manufactured by Mitsubishi, it was based on the Galant Lambda and imported for Chrysler’s Plymouth division. Its closely related Dodge counterpart was the Challenger, but the Sapporo was positioned as the more comfort- and luxury-focused version.
The Sapporo used a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and combined compact exterior dimensions with four-seat accommodation. Its styling featured a long bonnet, a low roofline and distinctive rear-quarter glass. Early examples were notable for details such as a single-spoke steering wheel, coordinated interior trim and generous equipment for the period. Four-cylinder engines were paired with either a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission.
A redesigned model arrived for 1981 with new bodywork, a roomier cabin and a 2.6-litre four-cylinder engine for the North American market. Later variations included luxury-oriented specifications and the visually distinctive Technica package. Within Plymouth’s range, the Sapporo served as an imported personal coupe that balanced relaxed touring qualities with sportier proportions, rather than operating as a dedicated performance car. Production ended after the 1983 model year.
