About Plymouth Reliant
The Plymouth Reliant was a front-wheel-drive passenger car sold for the 1981–1989 model years. Developed alongside the closely related Dodge Aries, it was one of Chrysler’s original K-cars and represented a move away from the larger, rear-wheel-drive Plymouth Volaré. Within Plymouth’s range, it served as an affordable mainstream family model focused on practicality and efficient use of space.
The Reliant was offered as a two-door coupe, four-door sedan and four-door station wagon, although the wagon ended after 1988. Early trim levels included base, Custom and SE versions, with LE offered later in the run. Final US models carried the Reliant America name. Depending on model year, engines included Chrysler-built 2.2- and 2.5-litre four-cylinder units and an optional 2.6-litre Mitsubishi engine. Manual and three-speed automatic transmissions were available.
The model is known for its straightforward, boxy design, practical cabin and wide choice of body styles rather than luxury or performance. Its relatively compact exterior provided useful passenger room, while some versions had front bench seating and six-person capacity. The wagon added extra cargo versatility. As a high-volume Plymouth, the Reliant helped establish the adaptable K-car formula used across many later Chrysler products and became a familiar American family car of the 1980s.
