About Plymouth Laser
The Plymouth Laser was a compact three-door 2+2 sports coupe offered for the 1990–1994 model years. It was built in Normal, Illinois, by Diamond-Star Motors, the manufacturing venture created by Chrysler and Mitsubishi. Sharing its basic engineering with the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon, the Laser gave Plymouth a modern, import-influenced performance model within a range otherwise centred on mainstream cars and minivans.
The lineup included the entry-level Laser, the better-equipped RS and the performance-focused RS Turbo. Depending on model and year, engines included a 1.8-litre four-cylinder, a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre twin-cam four-cylinder and a turbocharged 2.0-litre unit. Front-wheel drive was standard across most versions, while the RS Turbo AWD added all-wheel drive for 1992. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were offered, although availability varied by version.
Early cars are recognised by their pop-up headlamps, while a 1992 update introduced fixed headlights and revised front and rear styling. The Laser is best known for its low, aerodynamic shape, practical liftback body and broad range of performance levels. Turbocharged and all-wheel-drive versions are especially notable for combining strong acceleration and traction in a relatively affordable Plymouth coupe.
