About Plymouth Gran Fury
The Plymouth Gran Fury was a large, rear-wheel-drive car sold for the 1975–1977, 1980–1981 and 1982–1989 model years. It developed from Plymouth’s Fury line when the full-size model gained the Gran Fury name for 1975. Within the brand’s range, it served as the traditional large-car offering, positioned above Plymouth’s smaller family cars and aimed at buyers seeking space, comfort and conventional American-car engineering.
The original C-body generation was the broadest in scope, with two-door coupes, four-door sedans and station wagons, plus trim lines ranging from basic models to Brougham and Suburban versions. After a two-year absence, the name returned on a downsized R-body four-door sedan for 1980 and 1981. A further downsizing followed for 1982, when the Gran Fury moved to Chrysler’s M-body platform and shared its basic structure with the Dodge Diplomat. This final version continued as a four-door sedan through 1989.
The Gran Fury is especially associated with police, government, taxi and other fleet service, although retail versions were also offered. Its straightforward front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, roomy cabin, formal styling and generally durable mechanical components suited heavy-duty use. Earlier cars emphasised comfort and family transport, while later models became conservative, work-focused alternatives during the industry’s shift towards smaller front-wheel-drive vehicles.
