About Plymouth Colt
The Plymouth Colt was a Mitsubishi-built subcompact sold in the United States from the 1983 through 1994 model years. It replaced the Plymouth Champ and was closely related to the Mitsubishi Mirage and Dodge Colt. As a captive import, it gave Plymouth a small, fuel-efficient model without requiring Chrysler to develop a separate platform.
Most Plymouth Colts were front-wheel-drive hatchbacks or sedans, although body styles and trim levels changed between generations. Three- and five-door hatchbacks, four-door sedans and station wagons appeared at different points. Four-cylinder engines were standard, with manual and automatic transmissions offered. Certain model years also included sportier turbocharged versions.
The Colt Vista was a related but distinct variation based on the Mitsubishi Chariot. Its taller, wagon-like body provided greater passenger and cargo flexibility than the regular Colt, and some versions offered four-wheel drive. It occupied a position between a compact estate car and an early multi-purpose vehicle.
Within Plymouth’s range, the Colt served mainly as an affordable entry-level car below larger models such as the Sundance. It is known for compact dimensions, straightforward engineering and economical operation. The Colt left the line-up after 1994 as Chrysler shifted its small-car strategy toward the domestically developed Plymouth Neon.
