About Plymouth Champ
The Plymouth Champ was a subcompact hatchback sold in North America for the 1979–1982 model years. It was a Japan-built captive import based on the first-generation Mitsubishi Mirage and closely related to the contemporary Dodge Colt. The Champ gave Plymouth an economical small car during a period of growing demand for efficient, front-wheel-drive models.
Most Champs were three-door hatchbacks, while a five-door version joined the range for 1982. Depending on model year and specification, power came from Mitsubishi four-cylinder petrol engines of 1.4 or 1.6 litres. Equipment levels included basic and better-appointed Custom versions, with additional packages offered during the production run. Manual and automatic transmissions were available.
A particularly distinctive option was the Twin-Stick manual transmission. It paired a conventional four-speed gear lever with a second selector for economy and power ranges, effectively providing eight forward ratios. This unusual arrangement remains one of the model’s best-known features.
Within the Plymouth lineup, the Champ served as a compact, practical alternative to larger domestic models and complemented hatchbacks such as the Horizon. It was valued mainly for efficient packaging, front-wheel-drive traction, useful cargo access and economical operation. After 1982, Plymouth discontinued the Champ name and sold its related Mitsubishi-based subcompact as the Colt.
