About Plymouth Caravelle

The Plymouth Caravelle was a mid-size passenger car sold mainly during the 1980s, although the name first appeared in Canada for 1978. The original Canadian Caravelle was a rear-wheel-drive model related to the Dodge Diplomat. From 1983, the Canadian range also included newer front-wheel-drive cars, creating several distinct versions under one name.

The best-known Caravelle was the front-wheel-drive four-door sedan introduced in Canada for 1983 and in the United States for 1985. Built on Chrysler’s extended K-car architecture, it was closely related to the Dodge 600 and replaced the short-lived Chrysler E-Class in US Chrysler-Plymouth showrooms. A two-door coupe was offered in Canada, while American buyers received the sedan only. Canada also retained the rear-wheel-drive Caravelle Salon alongside these models.

Within Plymouth’s range, the front-drive Caravelle sat above the smaller Reliant and below the larger Gran Fury. It combined formal styling and a practical cabin with Chrysler four-cylinder engines, including turbocharged units in some versions. The model is known for its straightforward engineering, shared Chrysler components and more traditional presentation than many compact K-based cars. The front-wheel-drive Caravelle ended after 1988 and was succeeded by the Plymouth Acclaim.
