About Oldsmobile Toronado
The Oldsmobile Toronado was a two-door personal luxury coupe sold for the 1966–1992 model years. Positioned among Oldsmobile’s upper-tier cars, it combined distinctive styling, generous equipment and long-distance comfort with a less formal character than the brand’s large luxury sedans.
The original Toronado became notable for bringing front-wheel drive back to American series production after an absence of nearly three decades. Its unusual powertrain layout, bold proportions and strong V8 performance established the model as an engineering showcase for Oldsmobile. It shared GM’s E-body family with the Buick Riviera and Cadillac Eldorado, although each had its own styling and market identity.
Four generations were produced. The first, from 1966 to 1970, is best known for its dramatic fastback-inspired design. The larger and more formal 1971–1978 generation placed greater emphasis on luxury. A downsized third generation arrived for 1979, while the 1986 redesign moved the Toronado toward a smaller, more contemporary interpretation of the personal luxury coupe.
Trim and appearance variations included Deluxe, Custom, Brougham, XS and the sport-oriented Trofeo. Across its production run, the Toronado remained known for front-wheel drive, individual styling and its role as one of Oldsmobile’s most technically distinctive models.
