Oldsmobile Regency was a full-size, front-wheel-drive four-door sedan offered for the 1997 and 1998 model years. The name drew on a designation long associated with Oldsmobile luxury cars, but this short-lived model was distinct. It followed the discontinuation of the Ninety Eight and used the contemporary Eighty Eight platform and main body structure, with front-end styling and interior details linked to the former flagship.
Produced in a single generation and one principal sedan configuration, the Regency used General Motors’ 3.8-litre Series II V6 with a four-speed automatic transmission. Its six-passenger cabin featured front and rear bench seating, while standard equipment emphasised comfort and convenience. Leather upholstery, dual power front seats, driver memory, automatic dual-zone climate control, traction control and self-levelling rear suspension helped distinguish it from regular Eighty Eight versions.
Within the late-1990s Oldsmobile range, the Regency occupied a traditional near-luxury position below the more modern Aurora. It suited buyers seeking a roomy cabin, large boot, comfort-focused ride and formal styling rather than the sportier character of the LSS. No redesign or second generation followed; the model ended after 1998 as Oldsmobile continued reshaping its passenger-car line-up.
