About Oldsmobile Omega
The Oldsmobile Omega was a compact car sold for the 1973–1984 model years. Positioned below the Cutlass, it served as Oldsmobile’s affordable entry-level model and gave the brand a competitor in the expanding US compact-car market.
Three generations were produced. The first two, covering 1973–1979, used General Motors’ rear-wheel-drive X-body architecture and were closely related to the Chevrolet Nova. Oldsmobile distinguished the Omega through its split grille, exterior detailing, interior trim and comfort-oriented presentation. Depending on model year, the range included two-door coupes, three-door hatchbacks and four-door sedans, with six-cylinder and V8 engine choices.
For 1980, the Omega changed to GM’s redesigned front-wheel-drive X platform. This version was offered as a notchback two-door coupe or four-door sedan, with a four-cylinder engine or optional 2.8-litre V6. The range included the standard Omega, the more richly trimmed Brougham and sport-oriented versions carrying SX or ES badging.
The Omega is known mainly for combining widely shared GM engineering with recognisable Oldsmobile styling and a greater emphasis on trim and ride comfort. Its move from a conventional rear-wheel-drive compact to a smaller front-wheel-drive design reflected the wider industry shift towards lighter, more fuel-efficient cars. It was replaced by the Calais for 1985.
