About Oldsmobile Intrigue
Oldsmobile introduced the Intrigue for the 1998 model year as a midsize, front-wheel-drive four-door sedan. It occupied the space left by the Cutlass Supreme and sat between the smaller Alero and the more upscale Aurora. Developed during Oldsmobile’s late-1990s effort to adopt a cleaner, more contemporary identity, it was positioned as a mainstream family car with a sportier character than many traditional domestic sedans.
The Intrigue was produced in a single generation through the 2002 model year, using General Motors’ W-body platform. Its range included base or GX, GL and GLS versions, with differences mainly in comfort, convenience and appearance equipment. All models used a four-speed automatic transmission. Early cars had GM’s 3.8-litre 3800 Series II V6, while a 3.5-litre twin-cam V6 arrived for 1999 and became standard across the range for 2000.
The model is known for restrained styling, a roomy cabin, strong V6 performance and handling tuned to feel more controlled than the soft-riding image often associated with older Oldsmobiles. It competed in the crowded North American midsize-sedan market against domestic models and popular Japanese nameplates. Production ended in 2002 as General Motors was winding down the Oldsmobile brand, leaving the Intrigue as one of the division’s final all-new model lines.
