About Oldsmobile Firenza
The Oldsmobile Firenza was a front-wheel-drive compact produced for the 1982–1988 model years. It replaced the rear-wheel-drive Starfire as Oldsmobile’s smallest car and occupied the entry-level position below the Omega and, later, the Calais. Built on General Motors’ J-body architecture, it reflected the early-1980s shift towards smaller cars with transverse engines while retaining Oldsmobile-specific styling and trim.
The Firenza remained within one generation, although its range changed over time. It launched as a two-door hatchback and four-door sedan, gained the four-door Cruiser station wagon for 1983, and added a two-door notchback coupe for 1986. Versions included the basic S, better-equipped LX and SX, sport-themed GT hatchback, practical Cruiser wagon and LC coupe. Availability varied by model year.
Most Firenzas used 1.8- or 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines with manual or automatic transmissions. A 2.8-litre V6 was offered on selected later versions, including the GT. The model is mainly known for combining economical compact-car packaging with an unusually broad choice of body styles and a more formal Oldsmobile character. It was discontinued after 1988 without a direct replacement, leaving the Calais as the brand’s smallest model.
