About Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
The Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera was a front-wheel-drive mid-size car sold for the 1982–1996 model years. It arrived as General Motors shifted many mainstream models from rear-wheel drive to more space-efficient front-wheel-drive platforms. Within Oldsmobile’s broad Cutlass family, the Ciera served as the practical, high-volume choice.
Built on GM’s A-body platform, it was related to the Buick Century, Chevrolet Celebrity and Pontiac 6000. The range covered a two-door coupe, four-door sedan and the Cutlass Cruiser station wagon. Although it remained one generation throughout its long production run, styling, equipment, engines and trim designations were updated several times.
Major versions included the LS, comfort-oriented Brougham, S and SL. The International Series and XC offered a sportier appearance and equipment package, while later Series I and Series II models simplified the range. Depending on year, buyers could choose four-cylinder or V6 petrol engines, and an Oldsmobile diesel V6 was briefly offered early in production.
The Cutlass Ciera was known for a spacious cabin, straightforward controls, a comfortable ride and conservative styling. Its broad selection of body styles and trim levels helped it appeal to families, fleet operators and traditional Oldsmobile customers. For 1996, its final model year, the Cutlass name was dropped and it was sold simply as the Oldsmobile Ciera.
