About Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser
The Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser was a full-size, rear-wheel-drive station wagon sold from 1971 through 1992. It returned Oldsmobile to the full-size wagon market and sat above the smaller Vista Cruiser and later Cutlass-based wagons. Closely related to other General Motors full-size cars, it combined family-carrying capacity with the comfort and trim expected from Oldsmobile.
Three generations were produced. The 1971–1976 models were especially large and are recognised for their distinctive power-operated “clamshell” tailgate, which retracted into the body. A downsized second generation arrived for 1977 and remained in production through 1990, using a more conventional two-way tailgate. The final 1991–1992 version introduced rounded styling and updated safety equipment while retaining the traditional full-size wagon layout.
Custom Cruisers were offered in two- and three-row configurations, with some versions accommodating up to eight passengers. V8 engines, automatic transmissions and simulated woodgrain exterior trim were common features, although specifications varied by model year. Known for generous passenger room, substantial cargo space and relaxed road manners, the Custom Cruiser served as Oldsmobile’s largest and most traditional wagon. Its discontinuation marked the end of the brand’s rear-wheel-drive, V8-powered station wagons.
