About Oldsmobile Aurora
The Oldsmobile Aurora was a front-wheel-drive, four-door luxury sedan sold for the 1995–2003 model years. Positioned as Oldsmobile’s flagship, it was developed to give the brand a more modern image and compete in the near-luxury market. The model combined premium equipment and long-distance comfort with more performance-oriented styling and handling than traditional full-size Oldsmobiles.
The first generation, offered from 1995 to 1999, is known for its distinctive grille-free nose, full-width rear lighting and smooth, rounded body. It used a 4.0-litre, double-overhead-cam V8 related to Cadillac’s Northstar engine, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Its restrained badging and dedicated Aurora emblem helped distinguish it from other Oldsmobile models.
After a one-model-year break, a redesigned Aurora arrived for 2001. The second generation was smaller and more conventionally styled while retaining front-wheel drive and a premium cabin. Buyers could choose a 3.5-litre V6 or 4.0-litre V8 in 2001 and 2002; the V8 became the sole engine for 2003. Production concluded during Oldsmobile’s phase-out, with the last 500 examples receiving special paint, wheels and Final 500 identification. The Aurora remains notable as one of the brand’s most technically ambitious and visually distinctive late-period models.
