About Oldsmobile Alero

The Oldsmobile Alero was a front-wheel-drive passenger car sold for the 1999 to 2004 model years. It replaced the Achieva and served as Oldsmobile’s smaller, more affordable car, below the larger Intrigue and Aurora sedans. Buyers could choose a four-door sedan or a two-door coupe, both with seating for five and styling intended to give the brand a younger, more contemporary image.

Only one generation was produced. The range generally consisted of GX, GL and GLS trims, with some GL sub-levels and equipment differences across the model years. GX versions covered the entry end, GL models added features and options, and GLS represented the better-equipped specification. Depending on year and trim, engines included 2.4-litre and 2.2-litre four-cylinders and a 3.4-litre V6. Automatic transmissions were common, while a five-speed manual was offered with selected four-cylinder versions.

The Alero is known for combining a practical cabin and useful boot with rounded exterior styling, independent suspension and a straightforward front-wheel-drive layout. The coupe gave the range a sportier appearance, while the sedan was the more conventional family-car choice. Production ended in 2004 as General Motors discontinued Oldsmobile. A commemorative Final 500 edition closed the run, and the last Alero was also the final vehicle built under the Oldsmobile name.
