About Nissan Vanette
The Nissan Vanette is a compact light commercial vehicle introduced in Japan in 1978. Developed as a practical one-box model, it occupied the space below the larger Caravan in Nissan’s commercial range. Depending on the market and period, the Vanette was offered as a cargo van, passenger wagon or coach, and compact truck.
Early Nissan-developed generations used cab-over or semi-cab-over layouts to provide a useful interior within relatively small exterior dimensions. The first C120 series appeared under several names, including Sunny Vanette and Cherry Vanette. The later C22 expanded the range with different wheelbases, roof heights and passenger-oriented versions. Petrol and diesel engines were available, along with rear-wheel drive and, on selected models, four-wheel drive.
Major variations included the larger Vanette Largo and the Vanette Coach. The passenger-focused C23 Vanette Serena, launched in 1991, developed into the separate Serena minivan line, leaving the Vanette increasingly focused on business use.
From 1994, Japanese-market Vanette vans and trucks were supplied by Mazda and based on the Bongo. These S20 and S21 generations continued the model’s emphasis on load capacity, compact dimensions and straightforward operation. The Vanette remained a familiar small work vehicle into the 2010s and was eventually succeeded within Nissan’s range by newer commercial models such as the NV200.
