The Nissan Stanza was a compact-to-midsize family car produced from 1977 to 1992. It originated within Nissan’s Violet model family and was initially sold under Datsun branding in several export markets. The Stanza name became more prominent during Nissan’s global transition from Datsun to Nissan in the early 1980s.

Across four main generations, the Stanza developed from a conventional rear-wheel-drive car into a front-wheel-drive model with more efficient interior packaging. Four-door sedans were the core versions, while five-door hatchbacks and wagon or estate derivatives were available in some generations and markets. Most models used naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engines with manual or automatic transmissions.

The Stanza served as a practical mainstream model rather than a sporting or luxury car. Its exact position varied by region, but it generally sat above Nissan’s smallest passenger cars and provided an alternative to other Japanese compact family models. Later versions shared engineering with Nissan’s Bluebird range, while North American cars were mainly marketed as conventional compact sedans.

The model is known for straightforward design, usable cabin space and relatively simple mechanical layouts. Production ended in 1992, with the Altima succeeding the Stanza in North America and other Nissan nameplates filling its role elsewhere.
