About Nissan S-Cargo

The Nissan S-Cargo is a compact light commercial van introduced in Japan in 1989. It formed part of Nissan’s experimental Pike series, alongside distinctive retro-styled passenger models such as the Be-1 and Pao. The S-Cargo was the series’ only commercial vehicle and was designed to combine practical urban delivery capacity with an unconventional appearance.

Its rounded body, high roof and circular details created a snail-like theme. The name combines “cargo” with “escargot”, the French word for snail. Large, relatively flat side panels also made the van suitable for business signs and advertising. Despite its playful styling, the cargo area offered useful height and a maximum payload of up to 300 kg in two-seat form.

Only one generation was produced, identified by the G20 model code. It used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a three-speed automatic transmission. Configurations included a two-seat cargo version and a four-seat arrangement with reduced carrying capacity. Selected vehicles also featured details such as oval side windows or a canvas roof.

The S-Cargo occupied a specialised position rather than serving as a conventional mass-market Nissan van. Its short production run, unusual design and connection with the Pike series have made it best known as a distinctive Japanese-market utility vehicle and an uncommon collector model.
