About Nissan Primera
The Nissan Primera is a mid-size family car introduced in 1990, primarily for European and Japanese markets. It replaced the Bluebird in Nissan’s European range and became an important mainstream model for the brand. European production took place at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom, while versions for Japan were also built domestically.
Three main generations were produced: the P10, P11 and P12. Depending on generation and market, the Primera was offered as a four-door saloon, five-door liftback or estate. Petrol and diesel engines were available, with manual, conventional automatic and, on selected later versions, continuously variable transmissions. Specifications and model names differed between regions.
The P10 and P11 are particularly associated with responsive handling, supported by sophisticated multi-link suspension designs. Sportier versions, including the Primera GT, added more powerful engines and firmer chassis settings, while regular models focused on passenger space, comfort and everyday practicality. The P12, launched in 2001, adopted a more distinctive exterior, a spacious cabin and an unusual centrally positioned instrument and control layout.
Production ended during the 2000s, with European sales continuing until 2007. The Primera is remembered as Nissan’s conventional mid-size passenger car of the period, positioned between its smaller family models and larger executive saloons.
