About Nissan Presage
The Nissan Presage is a large three-row MPV developed mainly for Japan and selected Asian markets. Produced from 1998 to 2009, it combined family-focused practicality with a lower, more car-like profile than a traditional tall van. Within Nissan’s passenger range, it generally sat above the Serena in size and below the flagship Elgrand, targeting buyers who wanted generous cabin space without moving to the brand’s largest luxury minivan.
Two generations were offered. The U30 model, built from 1998 to 2003, established the Presage as a spacious front-engined people carrier, with petrol and diesel powertrains offered during its life. The redesigned U31 followed in 2003 and remained in production until 2009. It introduced dual sliding rear doors, a lower and flatter floor, more flexible seating and a more streamlined exterior.
Depending on year and specification, the Presage was available with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The second generation’s main engines were a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit and a 3.5-litre V6, paired with automatic or continuously variable transmissions according to version. Major variations included practical standard grades, the sportier Highway Star, and distinctive Autech-developed Axis or Rider models.
The Presage is best known for its adaptable passenger compartment, easy access to all three seating rows and useful load-carrying features. On U31 models, the fold-away third row and movable second-row seating supported both passenger and luggage needs. Its balance of comfort, space and road-car manners defined its role in Nissan’s MPV line-up.
