About Nissan Prairie
The Nissan Prairie is a compact multi-purpose vehicle introduced in 1982. It was an early example of the modern compact MPV, combining car-like dimensions with a tall, space-efficient body. The original M10 was notable for seven-seat capacity, sliding rear doors on both sides, fold-flat seating and a pillarless opening between the front and rear doors.
Three related generations formed the Prairie line. The first-generation M10 was followed by the larger, more conventional M11 in 1988. The third-generation M12 arrived in 1998 and was marketed as the Prairie Liberty before the Prairie name was dropped in Japan in favour of Liberty. Across the range, versions included front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive layouts, different petrol engines and configurations aimed at passenger or cargo flexibility.
Names varied by region. Early models were sold as the Nissan Stanza Wagon in the United States and the Nissan Multi in Canada, while the second generation appeared in North America as the Nissan Axxess. The Prairie occupied a practical position between a conventional estate car and Nissan’s larger passenger vans. It is chiefly remembered for efficient packaging, easy cabin access and adaptable seating rather than luxury or high performance. Its lineage continued through the Liberty until 2004, when Nissan’s compact MPV range moved on to newer models.
