About Nissan Pintara
The Nissan Pintara was an Australian-built medium-sized family car produced from 1986 to 1992. It occupied Nissan Australia’s mainstream family-car segment, combining four-cylinder engines with practical sedan, wagon and hatchback body styles.
Two generations carried the Pintara name. The R31 series was related to the locally built Nissan Skyline and used a rear-wheel-drive layout. It was offered as a four-door sedan and station wagon, powered by a fuel-injected 2.0-litre engine. Trim levels included GLi, Executive, GX and GXE, with a sportier TRX package available on selected sedans.
The U12 generation arrived in 1989 and represented a major change. Based on the Nissan Bluebird, it adopted front-wheel drive and was sold as a sedan or the distinctive five-door Superhatch. Entry versions retained a 2.0-litre engine, while T, Ti and TRX models used a 2.4-litre unit. The TRX added sports-oriented styling and suspension, while the Ti focused on additional comfort equipment.
The U12 also formed the basis of the Australian Ford Corsair under a government-backed model-sharing programme. Pintara production ended when Nissan closed its Australian manufacturing operation in 1992. The model is chiefly remembered for its local production, straightforward mechanical design and unusual transition between two substantially different vehicle platforms.
