About Nissan Pao
The Nissan Pao is a compact three-door hatchback created for the Japanese market and introduced in January 1989. It followed the Be-1 as the second model in Nissan’s limited-production “Pike Car” series, which explored distinctive styling outside the company’s conventional model range. The Pao had first appeared as a concept at the 1987 Tokyo Motor Show.
Built on the K10 Nissan March platform, the Pao combined straightforward small-car engineering with deliberately nostalgic design. Round headlamps, external door hinges, split-opening side windows and a simple cabin gave it the character of an older utility vehicle. Its compact dimensions, five-seat layout and front-wheel drive made it suitable for urban use.
The Pao was produced as a single generation under the PK10 model code. All versions used a 987 cc four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with either a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Buyers could choose a fixed-roof model or a version with a folding canvas top.
Orders were accepted during a limited three-month reservation period, after which the planned production was completed. More than 30,000 examples were built. Within Nissan’s line-up, the Pao was positioned as a design-led alternative to ordinary compact cars rather than a high-performance or luxury model. It remains known for its unusual combination of dependable March-based mechanicals, practical hatchback form and carefully executed retro styling.
