About Nissan NP200

The Nissan NP200 is a compact single-cab pickup, commonly described in Southern Africa as a half-tonne bakkie. Introduced in South Africa in 2008 as the successor to the long-running Nissan 1400, it used architecture related to the first-generation Dacia/Renault Logan Pick-Up. It was built at Nissan’s Rosslyn plant near Pretoria and sold mainly in South Africa and other African markets.

Unlike larger body-on-frame Nissan pickups, the NP200 has a car-derived, front-wheel-drive layout. It remained in one basic generation throughout its long production run, receiving updates to styling, cabin trim and equipment rather than a complete redesign. Production ended in 2024 after approximately 16 years.

The range included 1.6-litre petrol engines in 8-valve and 16-valve forms, plus a 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel, all paired with five-speed manual transmissions. Availability varied by year, and later models were limited mainly to the 1.6-litre 8-valve petrol engine. Base, Mid and High specifications were offered, alongside Safety Pack and air-conditioned variants and limited editions such as Loaded, Stealth and ICE.

Within Nissan’s range, the NP200 sat below larger pickups such as the NP300 Hardbody and Navara. It is known for compact dimensions, straightforward mechanicals, a practical load bed and a rated payload of up to 800 kg, making it suitable for urban deliveries, small businesses and fleet use.
