About Nissan Moco
The Nissan Moco is a five-door kei car developed for the Japanese market. Introduced in April 2002, it marked Nissan’s entry into Japan’s minicar class and broadened the brand’s range with a compact, affordable model suited to everyday urban use. Production and sales ended in May 2016.
The Moco was supplied by Suzuki under an OEM agreement and was closely related to the Suzuki MR Wagon. Nissan gave it distinct exterior details, trim choices and branding, allowing it to fit alongside the company’s small passenger cars while meeting Japan’s kei-car size and engine regulations.
Three generations were offered. The first-generation SA0 ran from 2002 to 2006, the SA1 from 2006 to 2011, and the SA2 from 2011 to 2016. All used a tall hatchback or compact wagon format designed to provide useful passenger and luggage space within a very small footprint.
Depending on generation and grade, the Moco was available with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, naturally aspirated or turbocharged 660 cc petrol engines, and automatic or continuously variable transmissions. Later versions placed greater emphasis on fuel efficiency and included idle-stop technology. The third generation also added the more distinctively styled Moco Dolce range.
The model is best known for easy manoeuvrability, a relatively spacious cabin, accessible controls and low running costs. It occupied a practical entry-level position in Nissan’s domestic lineup, aimed mainly at city driving, commuting and small-household transport.
