About Nissan Maxima
The Nissan Maxima is a five-seat midsize sedan positioned as a more powerful and premium alternative to the Altima. Its North American lineage began with the Datsun 810 Maxima for the 1981 model year, before Maxima became a standalone Nissan nameplate. Eight generations followed, with production ending after the 2023 model year. Later US-market cars were assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Early Maxima models were offered as sedans and station wagons, while subsequent generations focused on the four-door sedan. The first generation used rear-wheel drive, but the model adopted front-wheel drive in the mid-1980s. Depending on the year, versions included GXE, GLE and sport-oriented SE models, followed by S, SV, SR and Platinum grades.
The Maxima became known for combining strong V6 performance with a spacious cabin, comfortable road manners and equipment approaching entry-level luxury cars. Nissan often described it as a “four-door sports car”, reflecting its driver-focused positioning. Older versions offered manual or conventional automatic transmissions, while later generations used an Xtronic continuously variable transmission.
The eighth and final generation arrived for 2016 with distinctive styling and a 3.5-litre V6 producing 300 horsepower. It remained Nissan’s flagship US sedan until discontinuation, occupying a niche between mainstream family cars and premium sports sedans.
