About Nissan Hypermini
The Nissan Hypermini is a two-seat electric city car developed as an early demonstration of compact, zero-emission urban transport. First shown as a concept at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, the production model went on sale in Japan in February 2000. Its short body and 3.9-metre turning radius were designed for crowded streets and short local journeys.
There was one production generation, identified by the EA0 model code, rather than a range of substantially different versions. The Hypermini occupied a specialist position in Nissan’s lineup and was used in large-scale verification projects, including car-sharing trials in Yokohama and Ebina. An IC-card keyless entry system supported this role.
At 2.665 metres long, the Hypermini was notably smaller than a conventional hatchback. It used a lightweight aluminium structure, run-flat tyres and a permanent-magnet synchronous motor producing 24 kW and 130 Nm. Nissan quoted a top speed of 100 km/h and a range of 115 km under the Japanese test method used at the time.
The model was not intended as a mainstream family car. It is best known as a limited, purpose-built urban EV that helped Nissan study real-world electric-vehicle use and contributed knowledge to the company’s later electrification programmes.
