About Nissan Hardbody
The Nissan Hardbody is a compact body-on-frame pickup best known in North America as the D21-series Nissan Truck, produced from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. It replaced the Datsun/Nissan 720 and occupied the practical, affordable end of Nissan’s truck range before the Frontier name became established.
The D21 was offered in regular-cab and extended King Cab forms, with different bed lengths and either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Engine availability varied by country and included four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, as well as a V6 in selected markets. Its squared-off body, double-wall cargo bed and straightforward construction helped establish the Hardbody name.
Hardbody does not describe one identical global model line. While it is most closely associated with the D21, Nissan also used the name for versions of the later D22 pickup, particularly the Hardbody and NP300 Hardbody sold in Southern Africa and other export markets. Single-cab and double-cab work models were available, alongside better-equipped recreational variants.
Within Nissan’s lineup, the Hardbody served as a smaller alternative to full-size trucks and a durable platform for commercial, agricultural and personal use. It is chiefly recognised for robust chassis design, useful load capacity, compact dimensions and relatively simple mechanical systems. Nissan later referenced this heritage with a limited Hardbody Edition package for the 2024 Frontier rather than creating a separate new generation.
