About Nissan Frontier
The Nissan Frontier is a body-on-frame midsize pickup developed primarily for North America. Introduced for the 1998 model year as the successor to Nissan’s earlier compact truck, it gave the company’s pickup range a permanent model name while continuing a much longer Datsun and Nissan truck tradition. Current North American models are assembled in Canton, Mississippi.
Three main generations define the Frontier. The first-generation D22 was a compact pickup available in regular, King Cab and Crew Cab forms. The larger D40 arrived for 2005, moving the model firmly into the midsize class and remaining in production through 2021 with regular updates. A substantially redesigned third generation followed for 2022, retaining traditional ladder-frame construction while adding modern styling, cabin technology and driver-assistance features.
Versions have varied by model year, but rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, extended-cab and four-door layouts, and different bed lengths have been central to the range. Recent lineups include King Cab and Crew Cab models, S and SV grades, the road-focused PRO-X and the off-road-oriented PRO-4X.
Within Nissan’s lineup, the Frontier combines everyday usability with work and recreational capability. It is known for manageable dimensions, V6 power in recent models, practical towing and payload capacity, and off-road options without the size of a full-size pickup.
