About Nissan Cima
The Nissan Cima is a large luxury saloon developed mainly for the Japanese market. Introduced in January 1988 as the Cedric Cima and Gloria Cima, it combined formal styling and a spacious cabin with unusually strong performance for a Japanese luxury car of its time. Its early popularity became known in Japan as the “Cima phenomenon.”
Five generations were produced. The first-generation Y31 was followed by the standalone Y32 in 1991, Y33 in 1996 and F50 in 2001. After production paused in 2010, the fifth-generation HGY51 arrived in 2012 as a longer, more rear-passenger-focused relative of the Nissan Fuga. This final version used a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain and was offered in Hybrid, VIP and VIP G grades. Production ended in 2022.
Across its lifespan, the Cima occupied the upper end of Nissan’s passenger-car range. Earlier models used V6 or V8 engines, with turbocharged versions among the best-known variations, while later generations placed greater emphasis on refinement, comfort and driver-assistance technology. Notable features included electronically controlled air suspension on the original model and lane-keeping assistance on the F50. The Cima is chiefly recognised for its quiet ride, generous rear accommodation, substantial road presence and blend of traditional Japanese luxury with advanced equipment.
