About Nissan Cherry
The Nissan Cherry was a small front-wheel-drive passenger-car line introduced in Japan in 1970 and sold in various markets until 1986. Early exports commonly carried Datsun branding, including the 100A and 120A names. The Cherry is particularly significant as Nissan’s first front-wheel-drive car, providing a space-efficient alternative to the brand’s established rear-wheel-drive models.
The original E10 and second-generation F10, known as the Cherry F-II in Japan, were available as two- and four-door saloons, coupés, and practical van or estate derivatives. Small Nissan A-series four-cylinder engines were typical, while X-1 versions offered a sportier character. The E10 also achieved some success in Japanese motor racing.
From 1978, the Cherry name became closely linked with the Nissan Pulsar in export markets. The N10 and later N12 were marketed as Cherry across much of Europe, where three- and five-door hatchbacks became central to the range. Depending on market and year, choices included economy models, diesel versions and the higher-performance Cherry Turbo. The related Italian-built Cherry Europe was sold in selected countries.
Within Nissan’s lineup, the Cherry occupied the affordable small-car and later compact-hatchback class. It is remembered for practical packaging, straightforward mechanicals, varied body styles and its role in expanding front-wheel drive across Nissan’s mainstream range.
