About Nissan Be-1
The Nissan Be-1 is a compact two-door model created for the Japanese market and launched in January 1987. It followed a well-received concept shown at the 1985 Tokyo Motor Show, where its friendly, retro-influenced design stood apart from the more angular small cars of the period. Nissan limited production to 10,000 vehicles, with demand exceeding supply.
Under its distinctive body, the Be-1 used the front-wheel-drive platform and mechanical components of the first-generation Nissan March, known as the Micra in many export markets. Power came from a 987 cc four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with either a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Its light weight and compact dimensions suited everyday urban use rather than high-performance driving.
The Be-1 was produced in a single generation under the BK10 model code. Versions included a standard fixed-roof body and a canvas-top variation, while differences were otherwise limited mainly to transmission, colour and equipment choices.
Within Nissan’s range, it served as a limited-production, design-led alternative to conventional small cars. It became the first of Nissan’s Pike cars and established the approach later used for the Pao and Figaro. The Be-1 remains known for combining nostalgic styling and a simple cabin with proven March-based running gear.
