About Nissan AD
The Nissan AD was a compact, wagon-based light commercial vehicle produced mainly for Japan from 1982 until October 2025. It began as the Sunny AD Van, Pulsar AD Van and Datsun AD Van, reflecting Nissan’s separate sales channels at the time. These versions were later unified under the AD name. The model primarily served business fleets, delivery operators and public-sector users needing more cargo room than a kei van without moving to a larger van.
Four main generations were produced: the VB11, launched in 1982; Y10 in 1990; Y11 in 1999; and Y12 in 2006. Most versions featured a five-door estate-style body with two rows of seats and a folding rear bench. Depending on the generation and market, powertrain choices included petrol, diesel and compressed natural gas, with front- or four-wheel drive. The better-equipped AD Expert joined the Y12 range.
The Y12 was updated and renamed NV150 AD in 2016 before reverting to the AD name in 2021. Late models used a 1.5-litre engine with front-wheel drive or a 1.6-litre engine with four-wheel drive. Within Nissan’s commercial range, the AD sat below the NV200 Vanette and Caravan in size and load capacity.
The AD is known for practical packaging, manageable dimensions and a cargo-focused cabin. Numerous front storage areas, a spacious load compartment and seating for up to five made it suitable for mixed passenger and goods duties. Its long production run established it as a familiar Nissan fleet vehicle in Japan.
