About Nissan 180SX
The Nissan 180SX is a compact, rear-wheel-drive three-door fastback produced for the Japanese market from 1989 to 1998. It shared the S13 platform with the Silvia but used a liftback body, retractable headlamps and distinct rear styling. Within Nissan’s range, it served as the practical fastback counterpart to the Silvia coupe and a more accessible sports car than the larger Z and Skyline models.
The 180SX remained on one S13-derived generation throughout production, receiving mechanical and styling updates rather than a complete redesign. Early RS13 cars used the turbocharged 1.8-litre CA18DET engine, which inspired the model name. From 1991, RPS13 versions adopted the 2.0-litre SR20DET turbo engine. A naturally aspirated SR20DE option arrived later. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were available.
Grades evolved from Type I, Type II and Type III to Type R, Type X, Type S and Type G. The Type X is closely associated with the final facelift and its distinctive aerodynamic trim, while Type S and Type G versions used naturally aspirated power.
The 180SX is known for balanced handling, compact dimensions, multi-link rear suspension and extensive parts commonality with the Silvia. These qualities made it popular for tuning and drifting, while the hatchback layout provided useful everyday practicality.
