About Nissan 1400
The Nissan 1400 is a compact, two-door light pickup closely associated with South Africa, where this vehicle type is commonly called a bakkie. Its roots lie in the Datsun 1200 pickup introduced in 1971. South African production continued through the Datsun 120Y and Datsun 1400 names before the Nissan 1400 badge became established in the early 1980s. Production ended in 2008.
Rather than passing through several distinct generations, the 1400 retained its basic B-series design throughout its long life. Updates included a taller cab, revised front styling, front disc brakes and four- or five-speed manual transmissions. Its defining mechanical version used a 1.4-litre petrol engine with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
Most examples were single-cab pickups intended for commercial use, although a panel van was also offered earlier in the range. Equipment and appearance varied by year, with standard and better-equipped derivatives joined by sport-themed versions such as the 1400 Sport and Champ.
Within Nissan’s lineup, the 1400 sat below larger one-ton pickups as a half-ton utility. It became known for compact dimensions, a useful load bed, simple mechanical construction and suitability for urban deliveries, small businesses and general work. Its exceptionally long production run made it one of Nissan South Africa’s most recognisable light commercial vehicles. The NP200 succeeded it.
