About Mitsubishi Starion
The Mitsubishi Starion is a rear-wheel-drive sports coupé produced in Japan from 1982 to 1989. Sold as a three-door 2+2, it occupied a performance-focused position in Mitsubishi’s 1980s range and combined grand-touring practicality with turbocharged power. Its wedge-shaped profile, pop-up headlamps and angular styling are characteristic of the period.
The Starion remained within one model generation, although specifications developed substantially during its production run. Early cars used a relatively narrow body, while later wide-body versions gained prominent flared wheel arches and a more aggressive appearance. Most versions had turbocharged four-cylinder engines, with 2.0-litre units common in Japan and Europe and a 2.6-litre engine offered in North America and selected Japanese models. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, depending on market and version.
Trim names varied by region. Japanese models included several GSR grades, while the ESI-R was the best-known wide-body specification in North America. Badge-engineered Conquest versions were also sold there through Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth channels. The Starion is particularly noted for its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, intercooled turbo variants, distinctive wide-body design and role in establishing Mitsubishi’s reputation for technically ambitious performance cars.
