About Mitsubishi Sigma

The Mitsubishi Sigma name was used for several related mid-size and executive cars rather than one continuous global model. It first appeared in 1976 as the Galant Σ in Japan, identifying saloon versions of the Galant across three generations. The badge was also applied to export models with market-specific specifications and body styles.

In Australia, locally built Galant-derived cars adopted the Mitsubishi Sigma name in 1980 after previously being sold as Chrysler Sigmas. Available as four-door saloons and five-door estates, these rear-wheel-drive family cars included notable 2.6-litre four-cylinder versions. The saloon was replaced by the Magna in 1985, while the estate continued until 1987. New Zealand also used the Sigma name for several Galant generations.

In North America, Sigma identified an upmarket V6 four-door hardtop derived from the fifth-generation Galant, sold for the 1989 and 1990 model years. A final interpretation arrived in Japan in 1990 and later reached Europe. Based on the first-generation Diamante, it was positioned as a more refined executive saloon; Europe also received an Australian-built estate. Production ended in 1996. Across its varied forms, the Sigma is known for comfort-focused specifications, practical packaging and its role in linking Mitsubishi’s Galant range with the premium Diamante line.
