About Mitsubishi Precis
The Mitsubishi Precis was a budget-oriented subcompact sold in the United States from 1987 through the 1994 model year. Built in South Korea by Hyundai, it was a rebadged version of the Hyundai Excel rather than a Mitsubishi-designed model. It gave Mitsubishi dealers an inexpensive entry-level car positioned below the Mirage.
The Precis was a front-wheel-drive hatchback powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Early models were offered in three- and five-door body styles, while the range was reduced to a three-door hatchback from 1990. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, depending on model year and trim. Versions included the basic Precis, the better-equipped LS and the sportier-looking RS.
Its production run broadly covered two Excel-based iterations. The original version was sold through 1989, followed by a redesigned model for 1990 with updated bodywork and a simplified range. Later changes were modest, including a revised grille near the end of production.
The Precis competed mainly on low purchase price, fuel economy and ease of use. Its compact dimensions suited urban driving, while the folding rear seat added useful cargo flexibility. Performance, refinement and cabin space were modest, but the car filled a clear role as simple, economical transport within Mitsubishi’s US lineup.
