About Mitsubishi Pajero Junior
The Mitsubishi Pajero Junior is a compact three-door SUV produced in Japan from 1995 to 1998. Developed for customers who found the full-size Pajero too large but wanted more space and performance than the kei-class Pajero Mini, it occupied a distinct middle position in Mitsubishi’s expanding 1990s SUV range. It was primarily intended for the Japanese domestic market, although used examples were later exported to other countries.
Built in a single generation under the H57A model code, the Pajero Junior used the Pajero Mini’s platform but gained a wider body, broader track, reinforced structure and prominent blister-style wheel arches. Its 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol engine placed it outside Japan’s kei-car category. Mitsubishi’s Easy Select part-time four-wheel-drive system was standard, with five-speed manual and three-speed automatic transmissions offered.
The principal versions were the ZR-I and better-equipped ZR-II. Several special editions added distinctive trim or equipment, including White Junior, Anniversary Limited, Lynx and McTwist. The uncommon Flying Pug used retro-inspired bodywork and is the most visually distinctive variation.
Known for its upright styling, compact dimensions and selectable four-wheel drive, the Pajero Junior combined urban practicality with modest off-road ability. It was replaced in Mitsubishi’s line-up by the larger, purpose-designed Pajero iO in 1998.
