About Mitsubishi Pajero iO
The Mitsubishi Pajero iO is a compact SUV introduced in Japan in 1998 as the successor to the Pajero Junior. Available first as a three-door and soon afterwards as a five-door, it filled the space between the kei-class Pajero Mini and the larger Pajero. Its smaller footprint made it better suited to urban use than the full-size model, while retaining a traditional off-road focus.
The model remained within one main generation, although specifications and styling evolved during its production run. Petrol engine choices varied by market and included 1.8- and 2.0-litre units, with manual and automatic transmissions. Many four-wheel-drive versions used Mitsubishi’s selectable Super Select 4WD-i system with low-range gearing, while short overhangs and useful ground clearance supported driving on rough tracks.
Outside Japan, the vehicle appeared under several names. European versions were sold as the Pajero Pinin or Shogun Pinin and were produced in Italy by Pininfarina; Montero iO was used in some export markets. In Brazil, the related Pajero TR4 remained in local production after Japanese manufacture ended. The Pajero iO is chiefly known for combining compact dimensions, practical packaging and genuine all-terrain ability within Mitsubishi’s broader Pajero family.
