About Mitsubishi Magna
The Mitsubishi Magna was an Australian-developed, locally built mid-size family car produced from 1985 to 2005. It replaced the Sigma and became Mitsubishi Motors Australia’s core passenger model, positioned as a front-wheel-drive alternative to the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon. Although based on Japanese Mitsubishi architecture, it was widened and re-engineered for Australian roads, buyers and manufacturing.
Across three generations, the Magna was offered mainly as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. Early models used four-cylinder engines, while later ranges increasingly centred on V6 power. Model grades covered basic fleet and family cars through to better-equipped and sport-oriented versions, including the VR-X and limited-production Ralliart. The closely related Verada served as the more luxurious derivative, while selected late third-generation models added all-wheel drive.
The Magna became known for its roomy cabin, comfortable long-distance ride, practical wagon body and competitive equipment for its price. Australian-built Magna and Verada variants were also exported to several markets, often wearing the Diamante name, giving the programme a role beyond domestic sales. After numerous series updates, production ended in 2005 and the Magna was replaced by the Mitsubishi 380.
